Living in Forest Gate

Forest Gate is a Victorian suburb in north Newham that has become much more accessible since the Elizabeth line began running through its station. Liverpool Street is now about a quarter of an hour away and the West End under half an hour, turning a traditionally overlooked area into a practical commuter base.

Its biggest green asset is Wanstead Flats, a vast expanse of open grassland at the southern tip of Epping Forest, managed by the City of London and used for football, dog walking, running and wildlife. West Ham Park, also managed by the City of London, is to the south-west, and Wanstead Park, with its lakes and woodland, is further north.

Forest Gate's population is exceptionally mixed, with large South Asian, African, Caribbean and Eastern European communities, and Woodgrange Road, the main street near the station, has an eclectic mix of grocers, restaurants, cafés, and a growing number of independent businesses. The Woodgrange Estate, a conservation area of late Victorian villas with decorative porches, is one of the area's best-preserved streetscapes.

Housing is dominated by Victorian terraced houses, many converted into flats, alongside some estates and new developments. Rents are generally lower than in Stratford or Leytonstone, and more space is available for the money. Wanstead Park and Woodgrange Park stations add Overground services across north London. Evenings are quiet, with limited nightlife beyond pubs and restaurants, and residents often head to Stratford or Hackney for more. Forest Gate suits people who want an Elizabeth line commute, open space and value, and who are comfortable in an evolving, multicultural neighbourhood.
