Living in Earlsfield

Earlsfield is a quiet residential neighbourhood in the valley of the River Wandle, between Wandsworth Town, Tooting and Wimbledon Park. Its high street, Garratt Lane, is modest: local pubs, cafés, restaurants, gyms and small shops, busy on weekday evenings but rarely crowded, and very much aimed at the people who live there.

The attraction is fast rail with a village pace. Trains from Earlsfield reach Waterloo in about a quarter of an hour, calling at Clapham Junction on the way, which makes central London accessible without the crowding of the Northern line. There is no tube, and journeys to the City or east London usually need a change; buses connect to Tooting Broadway for the Northern line.

Green space surrounds the area. The Wandle Trail follows the river north to the Thames and south towards Merton and Croydon, King George's Park runs alongside the Wandle, and Wandsworth Common, Magdalen Park and Wimbledon Park are all within walking or cycling distance. The streets are generally flat, making cycling straightforward.

Much of the housing is late Victorian and Edwardian terraced houses laid out in regular grids, often called the Magdalen Park estate, with many still whole family houses and others converted into flats. That stock makes Earlsfield popular with young families and couples in their thirties, and the area has a strong community feel and busy primary schools. Nightlife is limited to pubs, and those looking for bars or restaurants in quantity head to Clapham or Wandsworth Town. It is a good fit for commuters to Westminster, the West End or the City and want quick trains, parks and a calm, settled neighbourhood.
