Living in Bexleyheath

Bexleyheath is an outer south-east London town centred on a long pedestrianised Broadway, with a shopping centre, supermarkets, chain stores, restaurants and a cinema. It developed rapidly in the twentieth century as a commuter suburb on the edge of Kent, and it retains a strongly suburban character.

It has some notable heritage. Red House, commissioned by William Morris and designed by Philip Webb, is one of the most important houses of the Arts and Crafts movement and is now run by the National Trust. Danson Park, with its lake and restored Georgian villa, is one of the largest parks in the borough, and Hall Place, a Tudor house with extensive gardens, is nearby in Bexley.

Transport is rail-based. Trains from Bexleyheath run to the three City and West End termini of Southeastern in thirty to forty minutes, and there is no tube or DLR. The Elizabeth line at Abbey Wood is a short bus ride to the north, with the Elizabeth line running straight through central London. Many residents rely on cars, and the A2 and A207 are major routes.

Housing is dominated by interwar semi-detached houses, bungalows, terraces and some modern flats near the Broadway, typically with gardens and generous space. Rents are among the lowest in south-east London, and the area is particularly popular with families. Schools, including grammar schools in the borough, are a significant draw. Nightlife is limited to pubs and restaurants. Bexleyheath suits families and people who want space, gardens and value, and who are comfortable with a suburban lifestyle and a longer commute into central London.
