Living in Greenwich

The Royal Borough of Greenwich stretches along the south bank of the Thames from Deptford Creek to Thamesmead, and it contains some of the most varied places in south-east London. Maritime Greenwich, with the Royal Observatory, National Maritime Museum, Old Royal Naval College and Greenwich Park, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, while the Greenwich Peninsula has been transformed by the O2 arena and thousands of new homes.

Woolwich, further east, was home to the Royal Arsenal, which manufactured munitions for the armed forces for centuries; its historic buildings have been converted into flats, restaurants and a theatre, and the Elizabeth line now reaches the City in around twenty minutes. Eltham, to the south, is a suburban town with Eltham Palace, a medieval royal palace with an art deco interior. Charlton has Charlton House, a Jacobean mansion, and Charlton Athletic's ground.

The borough has plenty of green space, including Greenwich Park, Blackheath (shared with Lewisham), Shooters Hill, Oxleas Wood, an ancient woodland, and the Thames Path along the river. The cable car across the Thames links the Greenwich Peninsula to the Royal Docks.

Transport includes the Jubilee line at North Greenwich, the DLR through Greenwich and Woolwich, Southeastern rail services across the borough, the Elizabeth line at Woolwich and Abbey Wood, and river buses from several piers. Woolwich, Charlton and the Peninsula offer more new-build housing than historic Greenwich and often lower rents, and Woolwich's Elizabeth line station has turned a once-overlooked town into one of the quicker commutes to the City from south of the river.
