Living in Tower Hamlets

Tower Hamlets is one of the most densely populated and fastest-changing boroughs in London. It stretches from the Tower of London and the City fringe through Whitechapel, Spitalfields, Bethnal Green, Bow and Mile End to Limehouse, Poplar, Canary Wharf and the Isle of Dogs.

It is home to Britain's largest Bangladeshi community, centred around Brick Lane, Whitechapel and Shadwell, and has a young and diverse population. The borough contains some of London's richest and poorest neighbourhoods: Canary Wharf's financial towers and luxury flats stand close to areas with high child poverty and overcrowding.

Its cultural and historic sites include the Tower of London, Whitechapel Gallery, Columbia Road Flower Market, Spitalfields Market, Brick Lane, the Young V&A and the riverside at Wapping and Limehouse. Victoria Park, Mile End Park, Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park and the Regent's Canal provide green space, though much of the borough is dense and built up.

Transport is excellent. The Elizabeth line serves Whitechapel and Canary Wharf, the Jubilee line serves Canary Wharf, the Central line serves Bethnal Green and Mile End, the District and Hammersmith & City lines run through the borough, and the DLR and Overground cover much of the rest. Within a single borough, a renter can choose between a warehouse flat in Wapping, a new tower beside Canary Wharf, a Victorian terrace near Victoria Park and a room above a shop off Brick Lane, all within a short ride of the City.
