About Croydon
Croydon is one of London's largest boroughs by population, and it contains a big, busy town centre of its own with office towers, shopping, arts venues and one of the fastest rail links to central London. It stretches from the dense, diverse neighbourhoods of Thornton Heath, Norbury and Selhurst in the north to leafy suburbs such as Purley, Coulsdon and Sanderstead in the south, where the borough meets the Surrey countryside.
East Croydon station has fast Thameslink and Southern trains to London Bridge and Victoria, as well as to Gatwick and Brighton, and Croydon's tram network links the town centre to Wimbledon, Beckenham and New Addington. West Croydon has the Overground towards Shoreditch and Highbury. There is no Underground.
The borough's council has faced serious financial problems in recent years, and parts of the town centre, including the main shopping area awaiting redevelopment, have looked neglected. At the same time, office-to-residential conversions, new towers and venues such as Boxpark and the refurbished Fairfield Halls have brought new residents and activity. Croydon is home to Crystal Palace FC's ground at Selhurst Park and to a large Home Office immigration centre.
Green spaces include Lloyd Park, Addington Hills, Wandle Park, Norwood Grove and the downland commons of the south.
