Best quiet London neighbourhoods

Quiet in London is relative. Even the calmest neighbourhoods on this list have buses, planes or trains somewhere in earshot, but the areas at the top — Hampstead, Blackheath, Barnes, Richmond and Wimbledon — combine green space, safety and low-key evenings in a way that makes city life feel much slower. The ranking uses the chill personality score, which rewards green space and safety and penalises nightlife and liveliness.

The scores do not measure some of the most common sources of noise. Aircraft approaching Heathrow pass over large parts of west and south-west London, including Richmond, Barnes, Putney and Chiswick, depending on wind direction. Main roads cut through otherwise peaceful areas, and a flat facing a bus route can be louder than one in a busier neighbourhood that faces a garden. Railway lines, football stadiums and summer events in large parks are also worth checking before signing a tenancy.

Quiet neighbourhoods usually come with trade-offs that the ranking only hints at. Many rely on rail rather than the tube, so evening and weekend services are less frequent. High streets close earlier, and there may be fewer places for dinner or a late drink. Some of the quietest areas are also among the most expensive, because calm, green, safe streets close to central London are in high demand. For better value, look slightly lower down the ranking at suburbs such as Forest Hill, Crouch End or Earlsfield, or on quiet streets within busier areas rather than in the most famous villages.
